A massive blaze that broke out late Saturday night at Gul Plaza on MA Jinnah Road in Karachi was finally brought under control after about 36 hours of continuous efforts by firefighters. The central fire has now been extinguished, and teams are in the cooling and debris-removal phase due to structural instability.
π Confirmed Casualties & Missing
At least 14 people have been confirmed dead, including at least one firefighter. More bodies have been recovered as rescuers work through rubble.
Around 60-70+ people remain missing according to authorities and family reports, with rescue teams using mobile phone data and other efforts to trace them.
π Injuries & Rescue Efforts
Dozens of others have been injured, many treated for smoke inhalation and burns at major hospitals like Jinnah Hospital and PNS Shifa.
Rescue and police units have set up helplines and help desks for families of missing persons.

The Plaza, a multi-storey complex with more than 1,000 shops, was severely gutted. Parts of the structure have collapsed and now pose a serious risk of further collapse, forcing authorities to restrict entry and focus on debris clearing.

Around 20–30 fire tenders, snorkels, and water bowsers from across the city participated in battling the blaze, with additional support from Pakistan Navy and Rescue 1122 teams.
Officials said the fire was categorized as a third-degree blaze due to its intensity and extensive spread.

Early reports suggested the fire might have started due to an electrical short circuit in a shop with flammable materials, but authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause.

The marketplace was a bustling centre with hundreds of small businesses and traders. Many shops were completely destroyed, heightening financial losses for owners and workers.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and other officials visited the site, expressed condolences, and promised support and compensation for affected traders.
